Bob Dylan, 'A complete unknown', and doing stuff together
I went to see 'A Complete Unknown' with three of my very favourite people last night. I can't stop thinking about it, it was incredibly moving. I cried several times, mostly during the songs. Dylan's music is so powerful anyway, but the film immerses you in it in an entirely new way. It connects you to the context, and to the emotions that Dylan must have been feeling when he was writing and performing those songs. It also connects you to the people immediately around him and the power he and his songs had over them all.
It was an intensely personal experience too, getting transported back to what was going on for me when I first connected with those songs and therefore what they mean to me. And then watching it with my little brother, and two friends who I've been through so much with, especially when we young adults (the age Dylan was in the decade the film is set), they've all been absolute rocks for me at different times whenever I've needed them. But we've also got drunk together and played and sung many a Dylan song, many a time. Those songs are like superglue. So yeah, a wonderful communal experience too, I won't ever forget it, hugging them all on the way out was quite something, not quite worked out what. Love probably, for each other and for Bob. I hope he knows how deep deep deeply appreciated he is. We have a lot to thank him for. Do things together folks.
